소셜 네트워크 서비스(SNS), 트랜드(Trend)인가? 패드(Fad)인가?

국내에도 소셜 네트워크 서비스(SNS, Social Network Service) 열풍이 불어 닥쳤습니다. 삼성(@samsungtomorrow), LG(@lg_theblog), KT(@ollehkt), SKT(@sktelecom_blog) 등 대기업들은 대부분 트위터를 사용하여 고객과 소통을 하고 있으며, 방송통신위원회(@withkcc), 인터넷진흥원(@kisa118) 도 트위터를 운영하고 있습니다.

두산 박용만 회장(@solarplant), 삼성 정용진 부회장(@yjchung68), 라이코스 임정욱 사장(@estima7), KT 표현명 사장(@hmpyo) 등 기업의 CEO나 임원들도 적극적으로 트위터를 사용하고 있습니다.

그러나 스마트폰이 아닌 피쳐폰을 가지고 있으면 루저인냥, 트위터를 사용하지 않으면 시대에 뒤떨어진 사람인냥 취급하는 시선도 있습니다. 정말 “모든 사람에게 스마트폰이 필요하고 트위터를 하지 않으면 안되는가?”하는 의문이 생깁니다. 소셜 네트워크 서비스가 정말 트랜드(Trend)인가? 잠시 반짝하는 패드(Fad)는 아닐까?

스마트폰은 가지고 있다고 모두가 스마트폰을 잘 사용하는 것은 아닙니다. 아이폰이 7살짜리도 사용할만큼 직관적인 UI를 제공한다고 하지만, 사실 그 기능을 제대로 사용하지 못하는 어른들도 많습니다. 그 분들에게 아이폰은 단순히 터치 스크린에 뽀대나는 휴대폰일 뿐입니다. 또한, IT 업종에 종사하는 사람이라도 VPN, 테더링, Exchange, 블루투스 등의 기능을 전부 사용하시는 분들도 거의 없다고 생각합니다. 주로 심심할 때 트위터나 채팅, 게임을 즐기는 용도로 많이들 사용하시죠.

스마트폰도 잘 활용할 수 있는 사람들에게나 필요한 것입니다. 컴퓨터와 인터넷에 익숙한 10대, 20대 젊은 세대들에게는 스마트폰이 대세라고 할 수 있겠지만, 30대 이상의 세대들에게는 대세라고 말하기는 어려워 보입니다.

많은 유저들이 트위터를 통해서 양질의 정보를 빠르게 획득할 수 있습니다. 트위터를 통해서 좋은 정보를 빠르게 전달해 주시는 많은 분들에게 항상 고맙게 생각하고 있습니다. 대부분의 기업들은 트위터를 사용하여 고객과 소통하고 브랜드 이미지를 강화하고 있습니다. 또한, 마케팅도 병행하고 있습니다.

그러나, 트위터를 통한 소통에도 분명히 한계가 있습니다. 심리학에서 개인이 관리하는 주변인이 150명을 초과하면 그 때부터는 제대로 소통을 할 수 없다고 이야기합니다. 기업의 트위터 계정을 팔로워(Follower)가 몇 천명 혹은 몇 만명에 이릅니다. 반면에 그들이 팔로잉(Following)하는 계정은 몇 백명을 넘지 않습니다. 맞팔률이 중요하다는 이야기가 아닙니다. 수많은 팔로워들과 일일이 소통한다는 것은 다소 과장된 표현입니다. 팔로워들에게 방송하고 광고한다고 표현하는 것이 맞을 것입니다. 그리고, 기업의 트위터는 자칫 양의 탈을 쓴 늑대로 인식될 수 있습니다.


개인적으로 트위터는 재미있는 수다의 공간이라고 생각합니다. 기업이 마케팅 수단으로 트위터를 사용하고 트위터 광고모델이 등장하고 점점 트위터가 본래의 목적에서 벗어난 길을 가는 것 같습니다. “세상에 완전한 공짜는 없다”라는 말에 저도 공감합니다. 따라서, 트위터가 마케팅 수단으로 사용되고 광고를 통해서 수익을 창출하는 것을 비난할 필요는 없습니다.

그러나, 스마트폰, 트위터, 페이스북 등을 사용하는 사람들이 그렇지 않은 사람들에 대해서 루저인냥 취급하는 것은 참으로 한심합니다. 트위터를 통해서 고객과 소통한다고 혁신적인 기업인 것처럼 이야기하는 것은 크게 착각하는 것입니다.

블로그나 뉴스를 통해서 보도되는 스마트폰과 소셜 네트워크 서비스(SNS) 열풍도 다소 과장된 시각인 것 같습니다. “그들만의 리그”는 아닌지 한번 되집어 볼 필요가 있습니다. 또한, 주류에 편승하기 위해서 급하게 달려가기 보다는 한 발짝 뒤로 물러나서 바라보는 시각이 필요할 것 같습니다.

글을 쓰다 보니 너무 부정적인 쪽으로 기울어진 것 같습니다.
그러나, 한국에서도 소셜 네트워크 서비스가 활성화 되기를 바라는 맘은 변함 없습니다.

페이스북 컨퍼런스 F8 Keynote Speech의 한글 자막 버전이 유튜브에 올라왔습니다.

Facebook에 가입한지가 얼마 안되서 아직은 잘 사용하고 있지는 못하지만, 항상 관심 갖는 주제라서 공유합니다. (공유라기 보다는 개인적인 자료 보관 목적이 더 큽니다. ^^)

가장 기억에 남는 내용은 공유를 하는데 장애가 되는 것들을 없앤다는 것이었습니다.

페이스북은 심플하고 편리하게 모든 것을 공유할 수 있는 기능을 제공한다. 로그인이나 팝업창 등 공유에 장애가 되는 장벽들을 없애는 것이 페이스북이 나아가는 방향이다

Keynote Speech의 핵심은 세가지로 요약됩니다.

포스퀘어(Foursquare) 배지 총정리

요즘에 위치기반 SNS 서비스인 포스퀘어(http://foursquare.com/)에 푹 빠져서 살고 있습니다. 어딜가나 아이폰으로 Check-in 하기 바쁩니다. 포스퀘어는 자발적으로 사용자가 위치를 등록하고 그곳을 체크인하는 방식으로 이루어집니다. 참고로 GPS 기능을 지원하는 스마트폰에서만 서비스가 가능합니다.

같은 장소를 가장 많이 체크인한 유저가 시장(Major)이라는 타이틀을 얻게되는 게임적인 요소가 포함되어 있습니다. 시장이 되기 위해서는 적어도 2번이상 체크인을 해야하며 서로 다른 날에 체크인을 해야 합니다.

그리고, 체크인을 할 때마다 특정 조건을 만족시키면 아래와 같은 배지를 받게 됩니다. 포스퀘어를 하다보면 이 배지에 욕심이 생깁니다. 그래서 여기저기 찾다보니 잘 정리된 사이트가 있어서 소개합니다.
